The View from Pasadena

Just a few weeks in my new city, sheltering in the apartment except for grocery trips and regular neighborhood walks or runs. Fortunate to be in a walkable city with tree-lined streets and access to natural open space. Though I would love to be free to explore the wider region, Pasadena is a great home base.

In the past couple of weeks, this has caught my eye:

Bridges and more bridges - The one that most have seen in pictures is the concrete arch Colorado Street Bridge. There are many more that cross over the Arroyo Seco; the La Loma Bridge and the Holly Street Bridge are two others I use to cross. Those on foot can cross under the bridges as well.

Modernist Architecture - Just last week while perusing a photography book, I happened upon a photo taken by Marvin Rand of a South Pasadena building located at 1517 Fair Oaks by architects Whitney Smith and Wayne Williams. That became the destination for the next day’s run, to see if the building was still there. Found that it was still there as well as nearby 1414 where Smith and Williams had their firm’s office. The two black and white photos taken on a rainy day of the former Friend Paper Co. completed in 1965, is another Smith and Williams project on Green Street.

Residential Architecture - Below is a pictorial of residential architecture mix nearby

Spring Blooms - The azaleas, camellias and wisteria are in bloom now and the Japanese Maples foliage add color to the residential gardens. It’s easy to appreciate the landscape architecture here :)
