Architecture Fieldtrip - Pasadena Mid-Century Medical Buildings
A post of some nicely maintained mid-century medical and dental buildings in the Pasadena Playhouse Village neighborhood, two by noted architects Smith and Williams.
1121 Green St.
This mid-century dental building looks great from all sides and gives off Meisian vibes. When I posted these photos on Instagram, a follower commented that this was the office of their childhood dentist.
175 South El Molino
175 South El Molino, another mid-century dental suite, was built in 1960. It sits on the corner of Cordova and El Molino.
The building has interesting details such as metal screening along Cordova St. providing privacy, lush landscaping and bench seating, exterior globe light fixtures and unique stair rails.
181 Oak Knoll Ave Architect: Smith and Williams Built 1965, Renovated 2017
181 Oak Knoll was a serendipitous find. The distinctive roofline caught my eye as I jogged by.
A past real estate listing says the mid-century modern space was designed specifically for psychotherapy. The office has a private waiting room with garden, private bathroom, and consulting room with one wall completely glass which looks into a private garden area specific to the office.
Blaisdell Medical Building 547 E. Union St. Pasadena, CA Architect: Smith and Williams Built in the 1950s
This 1950s building can easily pass for something more recently constructed. I love the minimalist design and the landscaping. I wish the current business signage was a better match; it overpowers the building.
From Los Angeles Conservancy website:
With its emphasis on integrated landscaping and large expanses of glass, Blaisdell cemented the architect’s signature style of making even commercial properties feel warm and down to earth.
